History of the Hocking County Court House in Logan, Ohio
The City
of Logan is not only Hocking County's
largest town, but also serves as its county seat.
County offices are housed in the center of the downtown district
in the Hocking County Courthouse.
This structure stands as not only a reminder of the area's
historic past, but a beacon to its future.
Constructed in 1925, the 70-year-old building's historic roots
reach nearly 180 years into the past.
The first county court and jail were established in one of the
town's original log cabins.
The structure, which had been the home of an early physician,
Joseph Whipple, served as the Hocking Courthouse from 1818 until
construction of the county's first "real" Courthouse
was completed in 1840.
The official incorporation of the city of Logan the year before
the completion of the Hocking Canal brought rapid growth to both
the city and the county. Today, during the Christmas holiday
season, the Courthouse as well as the City Municipal Building and
all of downtown, are graced with a remarkable, and historic,
series of decorations that attract visitors from far and wide.
The lighting of the lights during the Santa Parade (the Saturday
before Thanksgiving) sets the annual kick-off for what has become
known as the Festival of Lights
Logan's downtown is part of a large historic district which has been on the National Register of Historic Places in Ohio since 1976
