Murray City, Ohio

Murray City, Ohio was one of the coal mine boom towns of 20th century. It's coal mines were advertised as the largest in the world. Miners came from all over the world to work in this land of opportunity. This page and links are dedicated to this town, these miners, and their descendants, many of whom still live there to this day. Murray's other claims to fame are Murray City born Josh Devore (World Series Record setting left handed baseball player for the New York Giants 1911-1914 click on his name to see baseball card) and when Murray City's Football team made it into the Football Hall of Fame located in Canton, Ohio. The team's colors were Orange and Black.

Mr and Mrs. Tex Sullivan, sons Timmy and Jimmy of Newark were Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Davis and children.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Powell of Haydenville visited Sunday with Mrs. Rena Powell.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Jones of Newark are weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walt Wolfe.

Mr. and Mrs. Gene Wolfe, children Jody and Gary, were recent visitors at Columbus with Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Campbell.

Joe Sikora of Taylorville, Illinois and Walter Sikora of Inianapolis, Ind. visited in Murray City for the St. Philip Neri Festival.

Visiting Sunday with Mrs. Marie O'Rourke were Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Campbell of Zanesville.

The United Methodist Calvery Church Homecoming was held Sunday. Local people taking part in the special singing were the youth chior, featuring Mary Jane Ayers, Debbie Collins, Saundra, Peggy and Jane Smith accompanied by Mrs. Ruth Mackie; the Men's Choir featuring Brent Collins, Dean Ferrell, Curt Spencer, Bob Koon, Don Mohney accompanied by Mrs. Gina Mohney; "The Mitchell Girls" Sandra, Karen, and Laurie; and Mr. and Mrs. Don Mohney. Among the out of town guests attending were Clifford Holt of Columbus, Mrs. Lucille Harvey Corwin of Nelsonville, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Morgan of Reynoldsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Campbell of Zanesville, Mrs. Dianne Roberts, and Mrs. Judy Powell, both of Logan.

Mr. and Mrs. Rufus McCarroll and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Brant have returned from a recent trip through the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia and the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.

Weekend visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus McCarroll were Mr. and Mrs. Jesse McCarroll and son Lee, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Brant, and Mr. and Mrs. Delphin Easterling.

Mrs. Deloris Harris, children Ricky, Kathy, Gary and Jimmy of Buchtel, visited Sunday with Russ Cambell and Dianne.

Larry Wolfe, who is stationed at Fort Leonardwood, Mo. spent the recent weekend here with his wife Sandy, and son Ricky. He also visited with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Walt Wolfe.

Imogene Bookman and Grace Dupler visited Willa Bateman at the Hocking Valley Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bookman, and Grace Dupler attended the Federal Hocking Nelsonville football game Friday night.

Charles Mitchell spent a few days in Barberton visiting his mother, Mrs. Anna Eckels Mitchell, who is a patient at Barberton Citizens Hospital.
